‑The third age of our life is in Ayur Veda the age of the Vata temperament.
The older we gets the more our tissues dry out, this result in osteoporosis, dry skin, dry nerves wish lead to instability and lack of balance. To nourish your tissues you need to eat what you lack, and that is food rich in healthy oils and other creamy and cooked foods. What foods harmonize Vata and are beneficial when over 60 or have symptoms of aging?
Vatas benefit from heavy, rich, oily foods in order to harmonize the natural sense of dryness and instability. The best tastes to pacify Vata are sweet, salty, and sour (ex. grains, fish, citrus fruits). Foods to be avoided are pungent, bitter, or astringent (ex. chili, green salads, coffee). Cooked vegetables are best. Raw vegetables should be minimized. Asparagus, beets, squash, potato and carrots are highly recommended. Other vegetables may be taken in moderation if eaten with extra virgin olive oil, are: peas, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, and sweet potatoes.Sweet, heavy fruits such as bananas, avocados, mangoes, apricots, plums, berries, coconut, figs, grapefruit, orange, lemon, melons, papaya, peaches, pineapples, rhubarb, kiwi, dates, nectarines and dried fruits are acceptable.Rice is an excellent cereal for Vatas.Nuts are always welcome, as well as warming spices such as cardamom, cumin, ginger, cinnamon, salt, cloves, mustard seed, basil, cilantro, fennel, oregano, sage, tarragon, thyme, and black pepper.
